ReplyDeleteDear Fr. McIlhone,
I am one of the parishioners at St. Francis de Sales in Lake Zurich who often attends your Scripture Seminars. I believe that you are uniquely qualified to answer the following. I have had two questions posed to me by members of a non-Catholic prayer group in which I am the token Catholic. They are:
1. In the Exultet, sung on Holy Saturday at the Vigil service, there is a phrase referencing the Easter Candle:
“ …flame, divided but undimmed…”
I have been asked exactly what this phrase signifies. Does it relate to the action of many other candles being lighted from the Easter Candle (dividing), and the subsequent bright illumination of the entire room (undimmed)?
2. The penultimate book of the New Testament, the “Letter of Jude.” It seems that a number of commentators refer to Jude as the “Brother of Jesus.” Others refer to Jude as the “Brother of James the Lesser, also the Brother of Jesus.” Do these assertions have any basis in Scripture or Tradition or are these conclusions based on apocryphal writings from later centuries? Does “Brother” refer to Sons of Mary or cousins or some other relationship? Perhaps the reference Matt.12:48. Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. John Lahr jlahr@advaudiodev.com
